Clinical/Forensic Neuropsychology Postdoctoral Fellowship
Thank you for your interest. The 2025 - 2027 application cycle is closed.
Based in Los Angeles, Dr. Birath’s two-year neuropsychology fellowship offers a unique clinical-forensic hybrid training model for those interested in both academic medical and forensic private practice settings.
The fellow spends 60% of the time (three days per week) on site in the Neuropsychology Clinic at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center (OVMC) and 40% of the time (two days per week) working from home for Dr. Birath’s private forensic neuropsychology practice.
The fellowship follows the scientist-practitioner model and provides an integrated program of education through written articles and textbooks, formal didactic training, and training through clinical practice. The program builds upon core knowledge obtained in clinical graduate courses and practicum experiences, primarily in the areas of brain-behavior relationships (e.g., functional neuroanatomy, neurological disorders, neuropsychology of behavior, professional issues and ethics of neuropsychology, and practical implications for neuropsychological conditions). The core domains identified by the AACN and the Houston Conference guidelines (assessment, treatment and intervention, consultation, research, and teaching and supervision) are integrated into the training program through formal supervision and didactic experiences based on current scientific approaches to neuropsychology. The fellowship aims to prepare the fellow for independent practice as a neuropsychologist as well as pursuit of board certification in clinical neuropsychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology.
The fellow’s time is divided across patient contact, support work, supervision, didactics, research/program development, and supervision of OVMC predoctoral externs. Socialization into the profession of psychology will occur in a multidisciplinary academic medical setting (i.e., OVMC) where the fellow will work closely with two other neuropsychologists and provide consultation services to psychiatrists, neurologists, and other medical specialists. The fellow will attend multidisciplinary didactic seminars, both within OVMC at in conjunction with other institutions (e.g., UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center) on neuropsychology and other specialty topics in related fields.
The adult population served in both settings is comprised of ethnically diverse individuals typically from lower SES backgrounds with comorbid medical and psychiatric conditions. Patients in the OVMC setting present from both inpatient and outpatient referrals sources throughout the hospital. Patients’ linguistic fluency and acculturation status are assessed, and Spanish language evaluations are conducted when appropriate, with supervision provided by bilingual/bicultural supervisors. Evaluations include both brief and comprehensive assessments. Patients in the forensic setting are typically criminal defendants referred by their attorneys for evaluations concerning issues that affect trial competency and mitigation. Evaluations are conducted remotely with defendants both in and out of custody.
